video game, star wars video gamesRiot Games Launches In-Game Events To Raise Funds For LA Fire Victims

Riot Games is taking action in the wake of the devastating fires that have torn through various parts of Los Angeles in recent days. In the coming week, the publisher will implement in-game fundraisers in games like League of Legends and Valorant, with the proceeds going to those who were affected by the fires.

"While these are incredibly difficult times and there is a long road to recovery ahead, I’m grateful that we're collectively in this together--no matter where we are in the world," Riot CEO A. Dylan Jadeja said. "Thank you for all of your support."

Starting next week, the EX.O Collection in Valorant's in-game store will become the Give Back Bundle, and any money Riot earns from sales of cosmetics in this bundle will go to the Riot Games Social Impact Fund. Riot's Social Impact Fund is a donor-advised fundraising account sponsored by ImpactAssets, and aims to provide humanitarian aid in times of disaster. The Give Back Bundle will be available for purchase from Wednesday, January 22 to Thursday, January 30.

video game, star wars video gamesSony's Live-Service Game Status Report -- Canceled, Released, Shut Down

A mixed bag of results

Like many other companies, PlayStation pushed into the very popular, potentially lucrative, and very competitive, live-service market by making a number of bets, and not all of them have paid off. Most recently, Sony confirmed that it canceled multiple projects, including a live-service God of War and another live-service title from Bend.

There have been successes, too, mostly notably Helldivers 2. The game sold more than 12 million copies, ranking as the No. 3 best-selling game of 2024 in the US through November. Sony's multiplayer game Concord, on the other hand, failed to find an audience and was quickly taken offline, with its studio shuttered.

In this post, we're rounding up all the multiplayer/live-service games PlayStation has in development and providing a status report on them. This was inspired by Radec on social media, who was first to compile a rundown of Sony's live-service projects and their status.

It was reported in 2023 that PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, who left Sony in 2024, had a mandate that Sony's teams should make more games-as-a-service titles. A number of PlayStation developers were reportedly upset with this, and the blame was said to have fallen not on Ryan but Connie Booth, one of the most important and veteran PlayStation developers, leading to her eventual departure.

Another former PlayStation boss, Shuhei Yoshida, recently said the chance of finding success in the competitive live-service market was "small," but his replacement, Hermen Hulst, was given the resources to fund both single-player games and live-service titles at the same time. However, had Yoshida stayed in that role, he said he would have "tried to resist" the push into the live-service market. He joked, "That's one of the reasons they removed me."

Prior to the cancellation of The Last of Us Online and the live-service God of War most recently, Sony indicated it was pulling back from its ambitious live-service strategy. Back in 2023, Sony management said it would only go ahead with six live-service games in the near future, down from a dozen. At the time, management said it was attempting to focus on quality over quantity. But that's not the end of PlayStation's foray into live-service, so let's take a look at how things have gone so far and where future projects stand.

Helldivers 2

One of Sony's most successful live-service games ever, Helldivers 2 launched in early 2024 and became a huge hit right away. It has since sold more than 12 million copies. It's currently the No. 3 best-selling game of 2024 in the US through November, and it's likely to rank inside the top five for all of 2024 when December's data comes out later this month. The game has faced its share of issues, too, as developer Arrowhead was criticized for requiring a PlayStation Account for its Steam release (a decision that was later reversed, though subsequent Sony PC games do require one) and for the way its paid Killzone cosmetics were rolled out. But Helldivers 2 remains very popular and is also getting a Hollywood movie adaptation in the future.

Concord

Sony's biggest live-service failure, at least among games that have come out, Concord launched in late August 2024 for PS5, but unlike many live-service games, which are free-to-play, it carried a $40 price tag. It drew a generally positive critical response, but it reportedly only sold 25,000 copies. Unsurprisingly, then, Sony shut the game down two weeks after launch. There was a period in which it seemed possible that it would be reworked and relaunched, but instead Sony refunded players and developer Firewalk Studios, which Sony acquired in 2023, was closed.

Fairgame$

Former Assassin's Creed boss Jade Raymond's new team, the PlayStation-owned Haven Studios, is making a heist-themed competitive game for PS5 and PC called Fairgame$ (yes, it's really styled that way). Described as a "fresh, modern take on the heist genre," Fairgame$ aims to be a competitive heist game where people steal from the rich to "rebalance the scales." No gameplay footage has been released and there is no word on the launch timing.

Horizon multiplayer game and MMO

It's been reported that Guerrilla Games is developing a live-service, online game based on its Horizon series. There is basically nothing to go on at this stage, and the game hasn't even been announced. But a report from September 2024 said the game was still going ahead in the wake of Concord's dismal launch and shutdown.

Beyond Guerrilla's new game, NCSoft is said to be working on a Horizon MMO in partnership with Sony. This hasn't been officially announced, however, and plans can always change.

Bungie games

Sony's Bungie studio has a number of live-service projects in the works, including ongoing support for Destiny 2, as well as a new Marathon, an extraction shooter-style revival of its classic FPS series. Beyond that, Bungie's incubation team is working on a genre-mix title reportedly codenamed Gummy Bears.

Additionally, in the wake of a massive upheaval at Bungie, a number of staffers shifted to a new team inside Sony that is building a brand-new science-fantasy universe, though whether or not it's a live-service game is unknown. Based on the latest information, all of these projects at Bungie and within SIE continue to go forward.

God of War live-service game

Most recently, Bloomberg reported that a live-service God of War game at Bluepoint Games had been canceled. Sony confirmed the cancellation to the site but had no other details to share. Many questioned how the God of War series might have translated to live-service/multiplayer, and it seems we won't find out. Bluepoint is best known for its work on various remasters and remakes, typically of single-player games, such as the acclaimed PS5 version of Demon's Souls, so this project marked a departure from the norm.

The Last of Us Online

In December 2023, Naughty Dog confirmed that it cancelled The Last of Us Online. The company said when it ramped up to full production, it realized the "massive scope" of the company's ambitions made the project unrealistic. Naughty Dog said it made the choice to focus on single-player games instead of live-service games. It now has two single-player games in the works, including Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and The Last of Us 3 (we think).

Bend Studio project

Days Gone developer Bend Studio was working on an unannounced live-service project, but Bloomberg reported on January 16 that it was canceled. There isn't anything more to go on, however. Bend Studio hasn't released anything since 2019's Days Gone. Prior to that, it was known for the Syphon Filter series and the Vita entries in the Uncharted series.

Deviation Games project

Deviation Games, a studio founded by Call of Duty veterans Dave Anthony and Jason Blundell, was shuttered in early 2024. It was partnered with Sony for a new IP that would have been exclusive to PlayStation, and many guessed that it was going to be a multiplayer/live-service game.

Twisted Metal

In February 2024, it was reported that UK studio Firesprite was developing a live-service Twisted Metal game, though it wasn't actually greenlit. In any event, the report said whatever was to potentially come of this was no longer moving ahead. Despite the existence of the ongoing Peacock series, the Twisted Metal series has been dormant since 2012's entry on PS3.

London Studio

Sony's London Studio development team (known for SingStar, EyeToy, and other unconventional PlayStation games) was said to be working on a fantasy co-op live-service game set in an alternate version of London. But it wasn't meant to be. The game was canceled alongside Sony's closure of London Studio as part of Sony's wide cost-cutting program.

Spider-Man: The Great Web

In 2024, it was reported that Insomniac was working on a Spider-Man live-service project called Spider-Man: The Great Web. A leaked gameplay video showed that teams of five players would have faced off against the Sinister Six in New York City. The game would have incorporated multiverse elements, too, the leak said, and players would have been able to choose from a big roster of Marvel superheroes.

Sony has provided audiences with another look at its upcoming Until Dawn film the release of the film's first trailer trailer showing the cast of unlucky characters facing off with masked slashers, corpse-like creatures, and skin burrowing bugs.

video game, star wars video gamesGeralt Faces A War Between The Land And The Sea In The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep

Netflix's Witcher universe is continuing to expand. Next month, Geralt of Rivia will be back in action for a new animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. And while Liam Hemsworth is taking over the role of Geralt from Henry Cavill in live-action, Geralt's original video game voice actor Doug Cockle will reprise his role for Sirens of the Deep, as heard and seen in the new trailer below.

Sirens of the Deep is set during the first season of the live-action show, shortly after Geralt met Yennefer of Vengerberg--as voiced by Anya Chalotra, who reprises her role from the show. In this story--which is based upon Andrzej Sapkowski's short, "A Little Sacrifice"--Geralt is trying to forget Yennefer while traveling with Jaskier (Joey Batey). But it won't be long before Geralt and Yennefer are reunited when they get drawn into a war between humans and a kingdom of merpeople.

Despite Geralt's attempts to defuse the situation with his new ally, Essi Daven (Christina Wren), both sides seem set on ending their long-standing feud with blood in the water. And there are some monsters that emerge which even Geralt may not be able to kill.

video game, star wars video gamesWalmart Canada Is Hyped For The Switch 2 Reveal, Apparently

Nintendo is reportedly set to announce the Switch 2 on January 16, and Walmart Canada--known for upsetting video game developers by leaking announcements early--has chimed in with a meme of its own.

Today, January 14, the Walmart Canada Gaming account posted the popular image of Mario peeking from behind a curtain. "Hey, Mario," the post said, with the waving-hand emoji. Walmart Canada is no doubt referencing the rumors of a forthcoming Switch 2 reveal.

What's noteworthy here is that Walmart Canada has a semi-lengthy history of spoiling major announcements by posting product pages ahead of official announcements. As of yet, however, Walmart Canada hasn't spoiled anything about the Switch 2.

video game, star wars video gamesFirst Major Path of Exile 2 Patch Revamps Endgame Maps And Nerfs Lots Of Tough Enemies

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.1.1 launches later this week and developer Grinding Gear has now previewed what to expect from it.. According to game director Jonathan Rogers, this patch primarily addresses issues developer Grinding Gear can address "relatively quickly," such as endgame maps and enemy balance.

You can see some of the details in a new video on the official Path of Exile YouTube channel. Endgame mapping (i.e. the autogeneration of levels) have received a balance overhaul, altering the number of chests, number of monsters, and lots of other variables. Four new "Tower" maps have been added, and the first Tower map, Lost Towers, has been redesigned to be "less boring." More endgame maps will include bosses, correcting a glitch that causes fewer bosses to spawn than intended.

Pinnacle content has gotten some tweaks too. You'll be able to see citadels from further away in the fog of war making them easier to find. You'll also get up to six respawns for the pinnacle boss The Arbiter of Ash. The respawns can only be activated by the player who put in the keys at the Burning Monolith and they affect every player in your party at once. Respawns will be added to other Pinnacle content soon.

video game, star wars video gamesBaldur's Gate 3 Dev Now Giving "Full Attention" To Next Game, Codenamed Excalibur

Larian Studios is now giving its "full attention" to the team's next game, following the breakout success of Baldur's Gate 3. A spokesperson for the studio confirmed this to VideoGamer, adding that Larian will be on a "media blackout" going ahead.

[Larian boss Swen Vincke] and the team['s]… full attention is focused on crafting their next title," a spokesperson said.

Vincke also recently responded to a documentary about Larian titled "Larian Studios: From Bankruptcy to Baldur's Gate 3." The feature digs into Larian's origins and goes over the team's history as a game developer, leading up to the launch and huge success of Baldur's Gate 3.

video game, star wars video gamesEvery Upcoming Video Game Remake And Remaster

If there's one thing that you can count on when it comes to video games, it's that a remake or a remaster is never far away. 2024 was a pretty great year for a nostalgic return to the past, as new takes on classics like Silent Hill 2, Persona 3, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door proved that there was still plenty of magic to be found in these upgraded games. 2025's release slate is sure to include a number of remakes or remasters, and we've rounded up all the known games getting a fresh lease on life below, whether or not they're confirmed to launch in 2025. You can check in for updates as the rest of the gaming calendar is fleshed out over the months to come.

Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered - February 14

Last year saw the original trilogy of Tomb Raider games get the remaster treatment, and in 2025, Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics will be shining a light on the Darkness trilogy. These games--The Last Revelation, Chronicles, and Angel of Darkness--aren't as beloved as the original trilogy, but perhaps the new graphical polish and quality-of-life updates can give them the second chance they deserve. Angel of Darkness is easily the game that can benefit the most from the remaster, as it was infamously plagued by numerous issues during development.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars - March 6, 2025

After an extended session of radio silence, Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster reemerged during the August 2024 Nintendo Partner Direct, this time with a confirmed March 2025 release date. These classic JRPGs will arrive on PC and console with some big visual upgrades, bringing the beloved games into the high-definition era. There'll also be some handy gameplay features added, like the option to speed up combat, auto-saves, and an auto-battle button for when you want to sit back and relax.

Tiny Dangerous Dungeons - March 7, 2025

The classic mini-metroidvania Tiny Dangerous Dungeons is making a comeback in 2025, as the remake features a bigger dungeon to explore, new secrets to stumble across, and even tougher boss fights to tackle.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition - March 20, 2025

Xenoblade fans have been waiting a long time for this Wii U-exclusive game to make its way to the Switch, but at long last, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will hit the platform in March. The Xenoblade spin-off will launch with not only a graphical upgrade, but also several tweaks to the gameplay, new story content, and a new epilogue chapter.

Lunar: Remastered Collection - Spring 2025

It's a great time to be a fan of old-school JRPGs, as in addition to the recent Dragon Quest remakes and the return of classic Suikoden, you can also keep an eye open for Lunar: Remastered Collection. A compilation that includes Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, these games have often been credited for helping JRPGs to find an audience outside of Japan. This edition will have numerous upgrades, like widescreen support, enhanced pixel art, HD animated cutscenes, and all-new English voice-acting.

Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-Remake - 2025

Following last year's well-received remake of Dragon Quest 3, Square Enix is going even further back in time to bring the first two Dragon Quest games into the modern era. Details on this one-two punch combo of JRPGs are slim for now, but if it follows the template set by the Dragon Quest 3 remake, you can expect the first two games in The Erdrick Trilogy to look captivating through Square Enix's signature HD-2D design.

House of the Dead 2: Remake - 2025

Scheduled to release in Spring 2025, House of the Dead 2: Remake will launch for PC, Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. The remake features gruesome new graphics, remastered music, and new modes. 2023's House of the Dead: Remake game wasn't well-received, so this reimagining of the 1998 arcade game might have its work cut out for it.

Crazy Taxi - TBA

Grab your favorite Hawaiian shirt, put on an Offspring album, and get ready to drive recklessly, as Crazy Taxi is making a comeback. Sega hasn't shared too many details on this remake, but it has confirmed that the new Crazy Taxi will be an open-world multiplayer game with MMO elements. The goal is to blend photo-realistic visuals with chaotic gameplay, keeping the spirit of the franchise intact.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos - TBA

A little renaissance is happening right now with platformer games that are headlined by adorable mascots, and Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is one such title that you can look forward to. A remaster of the 1997 3D platformer, development on this title is being handled by a reborn Argonaut Games.

Bubble Ghost Remake - TBA

A ghostly platformer, Bubble Ghost Remake has a wild premise that revolves around the ghost of a renowned inventor exploring his old castle, facing his out-of-control inventions, and doing his best to guide a bubble to freedom. Based on a '90s game, this new version of Bubble Ghost features a heck of a glow-up, as all 36 original levels have been recreated with original art. The story has been expanded on as well, as there are secret rooms, alternative endings, and hidden collectibles to uncover.

Gothic - 2025

Some games age surprisingly well with time, while other games…less so. Gothic felt dated even back in 2001, with many reviews noting the stiff combat system and clumsy controls, but Alkimia Interactive is aiming to modernize the experience with some big gameplay enhancements. If you're interested in checking out the roots of this dark fantasy series, Gothic Classic is available on PC and Nintendo Switch.

Front Mission 3 - TBA

Front Mission 1 and 2's remakes have been serviceable returns to that universe of mechanized warfare, but for US fans, Front Mission 3 is where the franchise truly began. Front Mission 3 was the first game in the series to launch outside of Japan, and like the previous two remakes, you can expect a graphically improved game, more content to explore, and tweaked gameplay.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of the Sky - 2025

Anyone looking to jump into the long-running series of Trails games can start at the very beginning of this year, as The Legend of Heroes: Trails of the Sky is getting a remake. Briefly shown off in the August 2024 Nintendo Direct, Nihon Falcom has kept relatively quiet about the game, but the brief teaser did show off a vibrant world for players to explore and a release window of 2025.

Max Payne 1 and 2 - TBA

Butter them up, because Remedy Entertainment is on a roll lately. With Alan Wake 2 earning critical acclaim across the globe, the studio is preparing to return to its past with remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. That's a whole lot of Payne. While Remedy sold the rights to the Max Payne franchise to Rockstar Games back in 2002, the two studios have teamed up to combine both games in a single package of hard-boiled narration, gritty action, and the genre-defining bullet-time gameplay--just like what took the industry by storm decades ago.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater - TBA

Long considered to be the definitive game in the series, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is getting the grand remake treatment and was originally scheduled for a 2024 release. That date came and went, with Konami providing no update on the game at the time.

What we do know is that Konami plans to bring the origin story of Big Boss into the modern age with "cutting-edge graphics and 3D audio," while also retaining the elements that made the game so iconic all those years ago--namely, tight stealth, jungle warfare, and that banger of a theme song in this Cold War thriller.

Operation Black Mesa - TBA

Half-Life's expansions--Opposing Force and Blue Shift--were great detours from the original story of Gordon Freeman, and those memorable add-ons are being reimagined in Operation: Black Mesa. Development under Tripwire Studios is still ongoing, but with Valve's blessing, this community-led remake of the expansions looks like a thrilling return to the Black Mesa incident.

Presentable Liberty Remake - TBA

Originally released in 2014, Presentable Liberty was a short game with an intriguing premise. Confined to a cell, all you could do was wait for letters from various characters to arrive across the five days you'd spend in solitude. The remake is a tribute to the late original game creator, Robert "Wertpol" Brock, and it'll have updated graphics, new interactions, more endings, and full controller support when it's eventually released.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - TBA

Ubisoft's remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has had a rocky development cycle so far, as the delays piled up and development shifted from Ubisoft's India studios to its Montreal team. The good news is that while The Sands of Time has been indefinitely delayed, there's an excellent spin-off available right now. If you're in the mood for a Prince of Persia game influenced by its past and metroidvanias, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a great game to check out.

Splinter Cell - TBA

Splinter Cell fans have been asking Ubisoft to bring the series back to life--as more than just a Ghost Recon cameo, at the very least--and those requests are finally being answered with a complete remake of the 2002 game. Development has remained in the shadows since the 2021 reveal, but Ubisoft has explained that it's aiming to modernize the series while retaining its core DNA. Splinter Cell is being built in the Snowdrop engine, the same software used to create impressive-looking games like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - TBA

Star Wars: Knights of Old Republic has been beset with issues since it was first announced in 2021, but development is still continuing on it. Aspyr Media was originally attached to this remake before Saber Interactive took over, and since then the Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 developer received a "significant equity investment" from private equity firms to help it retire its debt to Embracer Group. Now separated from Embracer, Saber Interactive revealed in September 2024 that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of several games that it's working on currently.

The Witcher - TBA

While new games set in The Witcher Universe are in development, CD Projekt Red is also working on a remake of the first game. Like several of its other in-development projects, The Witcher is being built in Unreal Engine 5. Fool's Theory is handling the remake, with the creative direction being led by several Witcher and CDPR veterans. This will also be an open-world game, a major change from the original game.

Yooka-Replayee - TBA

Continuing the trend of colorful 3D platformers, Yooka-Replayee is another blast from the not-so-distant past. A remastered and enhanced version of 2017's Yooka-Laylee, this new edition has been developed by key creative talent behind the Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country games. Fans can also expect remixed challenges, several quality-of-life updates, and new customization options.
