video game, star wars video gamesClair Obscur: Expedition 33 Is Great, But Its Popularity Raises Big Questions About How We View Japanese RPGs

When I first saw it at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, I was surprised to see a game from a French developer with the photorealism of Western RPGs and mechanical stylings of Japanese ones. Its polished, cinematic trailer gave the impression of a AAA game, even though I'd never even heard of Sandfall Interactive at the time.

Clair Obscur moved mountains. Despite its launch on the same weekend as Oblivion Remastered, it sold 500,000 copies within 24 hours and 1 million after three days. It's still maintaining the discourse and curiosity of the games community months later--something that you'd think only a title from a more experienced studio could do. It's all for good reason, of course--it's a great game. We even rated it a 9/10 in our Clair Obscur review.

In many ways, its critical and commercial triumph has been encouraging. We should have a wide range of RPGs made by people from different backgrounds, and we should have more turn-based RPGs. However, Clair Obscur's success also magnified criticisms of Japanese turn-based games, only some of which are deserved. Finally, the haters said, a turn-based RPG that is actually good--as if those don't already exist.

video game, star wars video gamesNintendo Exploring A Much Different Sort Of Controller Input

Nintendo has filed a new patent application that suggests an interesting new way to play. The patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) shows a crank-like device built to attach to the side of a game controller, allowing you to crank up the fun. Eh?

The description of the patent goes into detail about the mouse-operation sensor and how the peripheral could attach to a recessed surface in the controller with a mouse operation sensor, which may suggest it could attach directly onto the Switch or Switch 2 Joy-Cons. Then with the crank attached you could explore the many possibilities of crank-based gameplay, from fishing games to probably a second thing.

While fairly novel, this wouldn't be the first example of a video game device with a crank. The indie handheld hardware Playdate has a crank and developers and homebrew artisans alike have been coming up with various applications for it. And Nintendo did once make a cardboard crank with Nintendo Labo, so the company is no stranger to cranks.

video game, star wars video gamesCoD: Warzone - How To Complete Satellite Hijack Contract And Destroy Stadium Roof

Call of Duty Season 5 is live in Warzone, and this season blows the top off of Verdansk's Stadium. For one week only, players have the ability to complete a special Satellite Hijack Contract that lets them destroy the Stadium's roof. Completing this specific contract also grants special rewards. Here we guide you through completing this multi-step contract to open Stadium's roof for yourself.

How to get the Satellite Hijack contract

To blow the rooftop off of Stadium, it's going to take a few steps and a lot of teamwork. Additionally, multiple squads must complete the contract in the same match to initiate the Stadium breach. This means instead of killing every opponent you see, it's in your best interest to ignore some of the other squads around you, and let them work on their contract steps as well.

video game, star wars video gamesKojima Reveals The Two Deceased Hollywood Legends He Wanted To Make Games With

Writer-director Hideo Kojima has revealed the two deceased Hollywood legends that he would have enjoyed working with for one of his games. Speaking to IndieWire, Kojima singled out Steve McQueen (Bullitt, The Great Escape) and David Lynch (Twin Peaks).

Kojima said McQueen was his "childhood hero," and he's not giving up on the possibility of him showing up in a future project, even though the actor died 45 years ago. "If it were possible, even with CG, I would love for him to be in one of my games someday," he said.

Kojima went on to say that he had "always hoped" to cast Lynch in a video game of his. The visionary filmmaker and actor passed away earlier. Kojima was a big fan of his, saying he was "devastated" like so many others when Lynch died in January this year.

TMNT: Tactical Takedown, the latest mutation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game legacy, is leaping onto Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch with shell-cracking style on August 14. Developed by Strange Scaffold (creators of I Am Your Beast and Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3) in collaboration with Paramount Game Studios, the game mixes the strategic thinking of turn-based combat with the satisfying chaos of beat-’em-up action, bringing a refreshing edge to the franchise.

Set in a darker timeline where both Splinter and Shredder are dead, and the Turtles are on the brink of adulthood, Tactical Takedown tells a gritty coming-of-age story across 20 evolving, diorama-style levels. The game is driven by a genre-smashing soundtrack from award-winning composer RJ Lake, keeping battles intense and the energy high.

Launching alongside the console debut is the all-new Remix Mode, which will also be released as a free update for the existing PC version. Remix Mode doubles the enemy variety and introduces unique attack patterns that force players to rethink their strategies. video game, star wars video gamesBattlefield 6 Has A Server Browser, But There Is A Catch

Battlefield Studios has confirmed that Battlefield 6 has a server browser, but it's a return to what Battlefield 2042 did for its own server browser and is limited in a key way.

In an official FAQ, Battlefield Studios said Battlefield 6's Portal mode will have a server browser and that the option to find a gametype you're looking for will be "easily findable" from the main menu. However, there will not be a server browser for official servers.

Portal was introduced in Battlefield 2042 as a means to allow players to create and customize their own gametypes with custom rules and settings. In Battlefield 6, it goes further and allows players to make their own maps.

video game, star wars video gamesNintendo Wants To Know Your Thoughts On Its Divisive Game-Key Cards

A new survey by Nintendo has gone live, as the company wants to know what its users think of physical and digital game ownership. While there are a few general questions mixed into it, the survey primarily focuses on which format consumers prefer when purchasing games for the Switch 2.

There are various questions asked in this survey on this topic specifically, asking which factors determine if a digital game will be purchased instead of a physical one, while users can respond with multiple replies like "physical games provide a stronger sense of ownership" or "I like collecting physical games" when pressed for answers.

video game, star wars video gamesNintendo Raises Price Of Switch 2 Pro Controller - Get It For $84 While You Can

A bunch of Nintendo price increases went into effect today, August 3, and while Switch 2 hardware and games aren't impacted, controllers for the new console will cost you more now--unless you buy them soon. The Switch 2 Pro Controller has increased from $85 to $90, and Joy-Con 2 pairs have moved from $90 to $100. Nintendo's exclusive retro controllers for Switch Online have also increased. Not all retailers have updated their prices yet, which means you can get "deals" right now. Deals from the future, you could say.

The Switch 2 Pro Controller is $84 at Walmart--for the time being, at least--and $85 at Target and Best Buy. Amazon sold out of units at the $85 price today due to the price change that could go into effect at any moment. On Friday, Amazon and Target dropped the price of Joy-Con 2 to $90--five bucks lower than its old MSRP--and those deals are surprisingly still available despite the $100 price being active on the Nintendo Store. Amazon also has two-packs of Joy-Con 2 wrist straps for $13--Nintendo raised the official price from $14 to $15.

video game, star wars video gamesBlizzard Reminds WoW Players It's Illegal To Buy Gold (Unless You Buy From Them)

An official Blizzard forum post has warned players of the perils of buying World of Warcraft gold from a third party. However, Blizzard's reminder that you can instead buy gold officially hasn't gone over well with some in the WoW community.

WoW community manager Kaivax recently reminded players that buying gold from a third-party seller puts a user's account at risk of being hacked, and that players should protect their account and help to maintain a fair gaming environment by shunning the practice.

"Purchasing gold from other players puts your account at risk of being hacked and supports companies that steal accounts, operate bots, and disrupt the game economy," Kaivax states.

video game, star wars video gamesDonkey Kong Bananza Owes A Lot To A Longtime Xbox Studio

Donkey Kong may have been Nintendo's first breakout star, but for decades, the character was more commonly associated with other developers than he was with his creators. While numerous studios have put out Donkey Kong titles over the years, the simian really came into his own under the stewardship of Rare, who reinvented the character with 1994's seminal Donkey Kong Country. Though it hasn't been involved with the series since the early 2000s, Rare's work was so beloved that it effectively defined Donkey Kong for the next two decades--and that influence can still be felt throughout the newly released Donkey Kong Bananza.

It's surprising how much of Rare's DK survived in Bananza. Despite some visual references to past Donkey Kong titles, everything Nintendo had shown off leading up to the game's launch suggested it would be a complete reboot of the series. Even beyond the lore implications of Donkey Kong teaming up with an inexplicably young Pauline, Bananza's freewheeling, destructive gameplay and subterranean setting are a marked departure from the Donkey Kong Country of old, giving the game a flavor and identity that's wholly distinct from every DK title before it.

This first impression is not entirely off the mark; right from the outset, Bananza feels like a new direction not just for the character, but the series as a whole. While the game boasts plenty of platforming challenges to overcome, its core loop revolves around smashing your way through dense environments, using DK's mighty strength to carve up the terrain and unearth hidden collectibles. It makes for a decidedly different gameplay experience than previous Donkey Kong titles. And yet, despite this stark change in direction, Bananza still retains a number of elements that Rare's Donkey Kong games pioneered.

video game, star wars video gamesBirdigo Is Like A Combination Of Balatro And Wordle, And It's Out Now

What do you make when you combine Scrabble, Wordle, and Balatro? It's Birdigo and it's out now. This single-player word and deckbuilding game combines elements from those games, guiding a flock of birds on a global migration by forming words from a deck of letter cards. Each word propels the flock forward, with longer or more strategic words generating more "flaps," which determine how far the birds travel.

Gameplay centers around building words using a hand of letter cards drawn from your evolving deck. Some cards come with special abilities and certain letter combinations that can dramatically increase your score. As the game progresses, you collect new cards, upgrades, and modifiers like enchanted feathers or bird songs that change the rules in your favor. The key is to balance word-building with careful deck management to keep your flock moving along.

Help birds migrate using big words.
Help birds migrate using big words.

Birdigo uses roguelike mechanics, so each game is a fresh run with randomized elements, and the challenge increases the further you get. You'll face progressively harder levels and need to adapt your strategy based on the cards you collect and the goals of each round. The objective is to travel as far as possible and rack up a high score before your flock can no longer continue.
